Summary/Abstract: In the current linguistic literature, there is no consensus on a syntactic and semantic status of the so-called noun complement clauses. Five different standpoints regarding this problem can be indicated. In the first place, the clausal phrase is often analyzed as a type of relative clause. Secondly, it is described as an appositional phrase that modifies a noun. Furthermore, R. Dixon claims that it is an apposition, however, it does not modify a noun, but complements a matrix verb. The noun complement clause can also be analyzed as a complementation to a determiner. Finally, some authors describe the phrase as a noun complement. The aim of this paper is to show the complexity of the problem, and to indicate that there is no simple solution to it. The clausal phrase can be used both as a modifier and as a complement (regarding a noun). Moreover, a separate analysis is required for phrases expressing different kinds of noun arguments.
