Summary/Abstract: The study of executive function deficits in children with Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) continues for years. It is founded in the observation that their behaviour resembles the well-established behavioral symptoms of executive dysfunction – they are distractable, impulsive, have difficulties controlling inhibition and when planning and organizing their activities as well as problems in regulating their behaviour. This paper discusses some of the most investigated theoretical mechanisms, recent findings with imaging studies on brain structure and maturation rates and current neuropsychological theories that relate executive dysfunction with the syndrome. The emerging new paradigm which recognizes ADHD as a developmental impairment of the executive function system of the brain is described. The new understanding sees individual with ADHD in a much different light: as a child, adolescent or adult, man or woman, that suffers the burden of a developmental disorder with chronic difficulties that constantly undermine their efforts for self-management of daily living.
