Summary/Abstract: In this study we explore the teachers’ beliefs and attitudes to the play of preschool children, the opportunities they see for stimulating child development and learning through the play. The participants were 1405 teachers from 300 randomly chosen kindergartens from all regions of the country. The statistical significant differences were identified in the way the teachers with different professional experience arrange the main educational profits from applying the play in the education of children. The teachers with more than 20 years of experience put the emphasis on the way the play stimulates and enriches the knowledge of children, whereas the teachers with less than 5 years of professional experience see the gains more in the context of social development of children and the cognitive skills they acquire. In addition the children’s preferences for different types of play, for playmates, as well as theirInitiative for social play activities were revealed for each kindergarten group. Dynamic physical activities were the most popular and preferred by children, and the least preferable were the didactic games.
