Summary/Abstract: The novel Silences by Meša Selimović is narrated from the position of an unnamed character—the narrator, a returnee from war who cannot cope with peace. A temporal opposition established on a timeline of ”I: then and now”, or the well-known Selimović dilemma between ”I who am becoming” and the unpredictable ’’miracle which I do not understand”, continually follows narration and affects the construction of the chronotope and complicates its meaning. The work seeks to show through a comparative analysis of peace and war that the emotional state of the narrator affects the shaping of the chronotope and that on the path of seeking ’’that which has ended and that which has not yet begun”, a silence occurs with boundaries which are also the boundaries of an entire world.
