Summary/Abstract: A region is a concept widely-used both in daily life as well as in politics, the economy, administration, management and academic research. It appears in the language of everyday speech, the media, politics, the economy and above all in academia. The aim of this article is to describe the evolution of the concept of a tourist region, and to explain the controversy surrounding its definition and naming. Most specialists dealing with the geography of tourism regard a tourist region as an clearly defined category that can be delineated both on the basis of analysis of tourist traffic, and on related phenomena (e.g. tourist attractions, tourist infrastructure, supply of tourist services). Apart from the term tourist region, the literature uses names such as tourist area, tourist reception area and tourist destination. The term ‘tourist destination’, which literally describes a place of tourist migration and penetration, is difficult to translate into Polish. The concept is used in most cases for the analysis of tourist phenomena on a local or regional scale, in reference to places, micro-regions or regions, and with no particular need for further definition.
