Summary/Abstract: This paper concerns the analysis of three translations of the English poem by Joseph Brodsky entitled A Song (one is Polish and the other two are Russian). It was intended to investigate the boundary between the acceptable and unacceptable semantic transformations in the translation of a text provided with a regular rhyming pattern. The emphasis was put on revealing the arbitrariness and freedom of semantic decisions taken by the translators. As a result, the conclusion is drawn that such transformations should be restricted. In other words, they ought to correctly convey the meaning of the original text by virtue of various metaphorical transformations instead of crossing the boundaries of the original semantic field.
