Summary/Abstract: In his book “Optimism can be learned. The science of personal control”, Martin E. P. Seligman claims that the optimist persons have better school results than the pessimists. We tried to verify this statement by using the OPT questionnaire of optimism assessment, built by Monica Albu. 261 students aged between 15 and 18 years old, of 21 classes, answered the questionnaires OPT and CP5F (Chestionarul de Personalitate cu 5 Factori). Based on school performances, the headmasters of the classes that participated at the research nominated 55 students as “good”, 57 as “mediocre” and 25 as “bad”. The level of optimism do not associates with school performances: χ2(4)=5.667, p=225. But we identified two associations between school performances and the levels of optimism, conscientiousness, and emotional stability. More “good” students than “bad” students have a high level of optimism toghether with a high level of conscientiousness and/or a high level of emotional stability. More “bad” students than “good” students have a low level of optimism toghether with either a low level of conscientiousness or a low level of emotional stability and a low or medium level of conscientiousness.
