Summary/Abstract: In recent times religious vocabulary has often appeared in contemporary Russian newspapers and magazines. Text writers use this vocabulary to achieve a special effect, for emphasis or color. Biblical phrases achieve new metaphorical meanings that have nothing to do with the original words. They just become a source of irony, a negative assessment of the person or the situation described. The above process shows a cultural decline in Russian speech and writing.
