Summary/Abstract: The development of Piotrków that occurred after 1867 as a result of the creation of the province of Piotrków caused not only the development of infrastructure, residential buildings and industry. It also significantly increased the number of inhabitants as well as catering establishments and trade. In 1882, there were 6 hotels,10 warehouses of wine, 13 restaurants of various categories, 52 tap-rooms and brasseries called "bawaria" and 324 shops and tobacconists in operation. According to data from the year 1913, in Piotrków there were 90 establishments selling alcoholic beverages on site (restaurants, brasseries and tap-rooms). During the First World War, it was not easy to be an entrepreneur. A characteristic feature of the economic policy of the Austrian occupation administration, and also the primary cause of the economic decline of the city, was exploitation without incurring expenditure and investment. On the other hand, indigenous self-government administration, operating under specific conditions of martial law, was not able to lead an independent and rational economic policy at the micro level. Therefore, entrepreneurs and traders were left to fend for themselves, without any support. Running a business fluctuated between momentary profit and the real threat of bankruptcy.
