Ordinary Legislative Procedure in the EU Multilingual Environment - a comparison with Bosnia and Herzegovina

Summary/Abstract: Legally-binding acts of the EU (regulations, directives and decisions) are adopted through an ordinary legislative procedure, which starts with the development of a draft proposal followed by numerous revisions throughout discussions. This revision process implies the legal-linguistic revision of the text, consisting of several stages - i.e. editing, legal editing, and translating the final version into all the official languages of the EU. This paper gives a brief overview of legal-linguistic revision in the EU's multilingual environment, whilst summarizing the current situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). The main goal of the paper is to identify those EU practices which could be used for the purpose of improving the current functioning of legal-linguistic revision in the legislative drafting procedure in BiH.
