Summary/Abstract: As known from historical sources tzar Samuеl killed his brother Aaron in the area of Razmetanitsa at the end of the 10th century. The present paper traces the dynamics of the folk memory of this event in the same area in the last 100 years and presents the results of a field study on this topic, conducted in 2014. On the basis of this particular case an attempt of defining the chara- cteristic features of the local folk memory of historical events is made. Two main hypotheses are proposed: 1. Past historical events can survive in local memory only as toponimyc narratives. 2. The memory of past historical events can be influenced by another existing folklore mechanism: the generation of toponimyc narratives rooted in folk etymology.
