Summary/Abstract: The article examines the factors of innovativeness in the context of their leading or supporting role in the development of the regions in Poland. The main purpose of the analysis is to identify what factors affect the entire region, and which are important mainly for the development of regional centers. The analysis of selected characteristics of innovativeness in the regional structure of Poland leads to the conclusion that many activities related to innovation, because of the related decision-making processes and forms of financing and management, tend to localize in the major urban centers with regional and trans-regional administrative functions. It means that the innovativeness of regions in Poland is practically identical with the innovativeness and entrepreneurship characterizing their main urban centers. Regions do not strengthen the development of their centers, but their main urban centers are catalysts for the innovative development of regions. The article uses the desk research analysis (review of the literature and selected strategic documents of the regions).
