Summary/Abstract: Achieving the long-term goals of the European Union in the area of decarbonisation consists in lowering emissions and creating a low carbon economy offering new opportunities for economic growth. In this article, the author’s attention is focused on issues related to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. An essential element of the European Union’s climate policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is the establishment of the European Union Emissions Trading System which obliges the sectors subject to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore the aim of this article is to signal the problem of greenhouse gas emissions in the context of modern ways of reducing the total volume of emissions. The analysis focuses on one of the basic tools of the European Union’s climate policy to reduce emissions, which is mentioned already the European Union Emissions Trading System. The European Union Emissions Trading System is a cornerstone of the EU’s policy to combat climate change and its key tool for reducing green house gas emissions cost-effectively. It is the world’s first major carbon market and remains the biggest one.
