Summary/Abstract: German-language programmes of Central and South-East European theatres around 1800 were dominated by unpolitical and entertaining plays by A. W. Iffland, A. v. Kotzebue etc. and complemented by numerous texts of dilettante authors. One of the best examples of the latter category is the trivial comedy "Siegfried von Lindenberg" (1790) by Philipp Ludwig Bunsen, a plagiarism and depoliticized version of the successful novel of the same name written by Johann Gottwert Müller in 1779. Since both the novel and the play were internationally successful well into the 19th century, this mirrors the popular taste characteristic for reading and theatre cultures of the time.
