Summary/Abstract: The comprehensibly reconstructed biography of Géza Berger, a German-Jewish Hungarian, mirrors international political as well as cultural conflicts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in a paradigmatic way. His ceaseless wanderings through Central Europe and emigration to the US are consequences of unstable state relations at the time. As an actor, Berger’s case portrays the progression of theatre history on numerous stages in larger cities and in the province. Through his professional activity as well as his journalist and literary contributions he promoted and stabilized German-language culture in the crown land of Slawonia and in the ›German-American Community‹.
