Summary/Abstract: The European Union has been going through an intensive, but protracted self-reflection phase over the last two years. These reflections have been fueled mainly by the UK “Brexit” referendum, unfinished business in the eurozone, migration inflows and general anxiety linked to the election cycles in important EU member states. It is also a period in which Slovakia has rediscovered its interest in taking an active part in these discussions – a trend substantially supported by the fact that in the second half of 2016 Slovakia held its first Presidency of the Council of the EU since becoming a member state in 2004. This has not only had an impact on Slovak positions towards the EU, but also on the general political ownership and on its newly found sense of urgency that stems from understanding that any substantial changes in the EU’s setup and functioning, as discussed intensively during 2017, will be of vital interest to Slovakia
