Summary/Abstract: The author interprets the play “Mephisto” directed by Agniewszka Błońska, which had its premiere on 9 Sept. 2017 at the Powszechny Theatre in Warsaw, as an artistic manifesto on a Hungarian film by István Szabó and a novel by Klaus Mann. In light of the connection between “Mephisto” and Oliver Frljić’s “The Curse”, Karow analyzes actors’ statements regarding their situation in the face of a real threat. He notes the musical motif of the can-can being an important element towards building the narrative in Błońska’s production.
