THE EYE AS A MOTIVE AND APOTROPEION IN OUR POPULAR TRADITION

Summary/Abstract: In our popular art, no metter the place of presentation, the motive of the eye has a great occupies a very large space. Even more important is the fact the motive of eye in this plan, except in plasticsymbolic forms, is encountered in the oldest and most primitive form of the folk art, the geometrical. Appearance of this motive in different objects, as in textiles, bads, costumes, wood carving, metals, tattoos etc., enables us to claim that the eye had a wide usage among our people. Among the most frequent objects in which this motive appears are textile objects. In these objects the eye is encountered sometimes as central motive and sometimes in a set with other motives. This motive appears in geometric forms in carpets, pillows cases, mats that were laid in guest rooms (odas) etc.
