Summary/Abstract: At the turn of 19th and 20th century, Lviv was one of the largest centres of Jewish life in Central-Eastern Europe. Jews constituted approximately 30% of the population of that city. In the period of the autonomy of Galicia, interest in secondary education, and, consequently, in the tertiary one, increased significantly among the Jews in Lviv. However, they did not establish any confessional secondary school because authorities were of the opinion that it would isolate the Jewish minority from the life of society. Therefore, young Jews attended state schools. Amongst the boys, Second Middle School, in which the language of instruction was German, was particularly popular (and they constituted more than 50% of the students of this school). In turn, Jewish girls were studying in private female middle schools, which started to be established at the end of the 19th century, simultaneously with permitting women to enter universities. Proportion of Jewish girls in the population of the female attendees of middle schools in total reached, and exceeded, 50%, which makes it possible to formulate the conclusion that interest in secular education among Jewish women was one of the principal factors of the development of private female secondary schooling in Lviv.
