Summary/Abstract: In order to understand the thinking of Martin Luther, a former Augustinian monk we need to take a step into the Reformationturn of the 16th century. Luther was the child of the Middle Ages. He could adopt and at the same time see from a critical distance the theological systems of the Middle Ages, while transcending the mintheir progress. In Luther’s Christology, just like in the New Testament, Christ’s person and his work are inseparably linked. An essential part of Luther’s return to the pure foundations is the sola fi des, sola gratia, sola scriptura, where the cornerstone is of course solus Christus. Christ is the hermeneutical criterion of the Holy Scripture, because everything in it leads to Him. The nature of the church was a polemical question throughout the Reformation. Therefore the confusing ambiguity of Luther’s Christology can probably be best perceived in ecclesiology. Here, it leaves scholastic theology and draws on kerygmatic theology: its biblical connections emphasize the existential questions, leaving aside the use of traditional categories. The church is based on faith, love, and the other gift s of the Holy Trinity. It is clear that in this sense the institutional aspect of the church – which is the epiphany of its hidden dimension – is reassessed and its sacred, salutary nature is questioned.
