Summary/Abstract: Vitamin D is recognized as a prohormone. The circulating serum level is mainly 25 (OH) - vitamin D which is considered deficient at values lower than 20 ng/ml. Due to the identification of its receptors in various cells, its immunomodulatory role is nowadays investigated, in the prevention and treatment of neoplasms, in autoimmune and cardiovascular diseases. In the United States, >50% of psychiatric inpatients have vitamin D deficiency. A growing body of literature has found associations between vitamin D deficiency and psychiatric illnesses, particularly depression.
