Summary/Abstract: The Olympic Games take place not only at stadiums but also in the media, which try to outrun one another in covering the rivalry among athletes, both efficiently but also in a manner that commands attention and evokes emotions among readers and spectators. This tale, most frequently assuming the form of a sports commentary, takes place both in the verbal sphere, using a language characterised by a particular (ennobling or depreciating) emotional markedness, as well as in the visual layer, when sportsmen and sportswomen are presented in such situational contexts that portray their current physical or emotional state as closely as possible. The combination of both these layers, linguistic and extralinguistic ones, means that a sports commentary can be viewed in terms of multimodal communication and can be used in printed media that make use of the written word and static images as well as in electronic media which, additionally, employ moving images (videos or interactive infographics). All these features make sports commentaries an interesting object of media-linguistic analysis and its results are the subject of this article.
