Summary/Abstract: The assumption that the competence of managers represents one of the most important determinants affecting both the growth and life cycle of small and medium-size enterprises, was the basis for conducting this research. Therefore, this paper focuses on determining an impact of top managers’ competences on the life cycle of small and medium enterprises. To determine the actual impact of top managers’ competences in the life cycle of a company, the stratified sample of 200 small and medium enterprises in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina was selected. After the selection of indicators of growth for small and medium enterprises, 15 small and medium-size companies were identified, which in the period of three years recorded a statistically significant growth. By applying the Adizes methodology for the identification of managers’ competencies, and after the analysis of survey results, it was concluded that the competences of managers do not affect with statistical significance the life cycle of small and medium enterprises in the Federation.
