Summary/Abstract: The paper entitled: “Conspicuous consumption as a feature of the modern consumer market” is devoted to the presentation of the issues of conspicuous consumption. In this paper, an outline of the historical changes in conspicuous consumption has been presented. The significance of the goods of symbolic content as artefacts that are characteristic of conspicuous consumption has also been presented. The transformation in the perception of goods with the content of luxury as a factor of conspicuous consumption has been outlined. It has been indicated that goods with symbolic content create a specific cohesive arrangement of symbols characteristic of a given lifestyle. In analysing consumer goods, their forms, significance, status and contexts in which they are utilized, the significant changes occurring in conspicuous consumption have been indicated. The social competences availed of in demonstrating goods with symbolic content have also been presented. It has also been indicated that the description and explanation of the symbolic meaning of consumer goods enables the enrichment of the analysis of the processes of consumption.
