Summary/Abstract: Hedge funds are fast developing financial institutions strongly influencing financial markets in many countries. Their role in risk transferring, stock liquidity enhancing and derivatives markets development is substantial. Hedge funds are entities with very limited access to retail investors. They also implement very specific investment policies and complex financial techniques based on financial leverage, short selling of stock, as well as derivatives combination. Because of a lack of strict investing norms, limited transparency and lack of substantial supervisory of national financial supervisory institutions, the hedge funds are usually perceived as very risky. However, they also give to the investors the effective alternative in comparison with traditional financial institution offer. In last several years the substantial increase of the hedge funds market was observed. Also, hedge funds offer started to expand in Poland.
