Summary/Abstract: Byzantine coins and coin imitations have played an extremely important role in the archaeology of the Avars. With their help, Ferenc Pulszky, the lead archeologist of the second half of the 19th century, was able to identify the Avar find material. The Byzantine solidi from the burials of Kunágota, Ozora-Tótipuszta and Szentendre made it possible to date the remaining burial objects or to bind them to the Avars. In the aftermath of graves or as a scattering more and more not only Byzantine coins of the 6th and 7 Century, but even their imitative embossments of silver or gold were known, which drew the attention of research from the 1930s on. However, the first comprehensive catalog-like compilation and publication of all Byzantine coins from the Avarian settlement area did not come until the 1950s.
