Summary/Abstract: Functional area is a spatial layout consisting of functionally related areas. Knowing its role in the region requires analyzing the city’s relationship with its surroundings. The aim of the article is to present the disparities in local competitiveness of municipalities from the point of view of the functional area and to present the possibility of using a synthetic measure in this process. The competitiveness of the studied communes of Świętokrzyskie and Kielce Functional Area (KFA) is poor, as indicated by low values of synthetic measure. In the best situation in 2010 was Sitkówka-Nowiny (0.59), the weakest Górno (0.31); in 2015 − Sitkówka-Nowiny (0.50) and Piekoszów (0.28). In the case of KFAF in 2010, the level of the synthetic measure was 0.43, in 2015 − 0.36. In today’s economy the city is a center of increased development, largely affecting the surrounding areas. The emergence and development of urban functional areas is connected with the interpenetration of many areas of the city and its surroundings.
