Summary/Abstract: In this paper the author examined the question of the Roman weapon, hasta concerning its symbolic religious, juridical use. The question was earlier studied by A. Alföldi. The author follows Alföldi’s convincing hypothesis and completed it with several new antique sources. The hasta was used as a spear ensign from the very begginings of Rome to the late Antiquity and it could influence also its medieval use (cf. the Saint Imperial Lance). The author separetely studied the so-called beneficarius-lances, their (Hispanian) origin and its use as spear ensigns.
