On the Northern Extremity of So-Called Daggers with Cutouts

Summary/Abstract: The author presents finds of the so-called “daggers with cutouts” found along Desna, Sejm and Upper Don Rivers. The main area of distribution of such blades is bound to the Caucasus and the Crimea. The earliest finds can be dated by the middle — second half of 3rd c. In 4th c. similar blades appear on Chernyakhov sites in the basins of the Dnieper and the Dniester, while in late 4th — early 5th c. they spread in the Carpathian depression. Their appearance on the border between the forest and forest-steppe zones may be explained by participation of the Alans in the events of the late 4th c. Seemingly, the finds of the daggers with cutouts outside the Alan area are connected with warriors' rituals.
