Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with prezent-day position of traditional genre of Czech prose – historical novel, which popularity has been descending from November 1989. The author tries to term reasons of this phenomenon inside the genre and also outside of it. Besides evident social-political circumstances there is upcoming competition in form of historical fantasy. The paper is closed-down with prognosis of future of the genre based on substantial analysis of existing fictional texts: Peklo Beneš (2002) by Josef Nesvadba and Munkdorf (2006) by Jan Zenkl.
