Summary/Abstract: Concerning the figure of Europe, it would be better to renounce to the self-definition and the self-figuration and accept the black spot of the culture considered to be “our own.” What Paul Valéry said about liberty, i.e. that it means a response, applies to the idea of Europe. A response to what? Already this question is a trap. Only if we alter the stance we used to take in scientific or everyday questioning and disengage ourselves from turning that about we ask into defined What or What For, could we get out from the circle of Eurocentric consciousness drawing upon both the Proper and The Whole, either taking over or eliminating what presents itself as strange and alien. In order to speak of Europe without Eurocentrism and cultural narcissism, one should simultaneously speak of the non-European within and outside Europe.
