Summary/Abstract: This paper is a critical essay on the problem of evolution of the Romanian novel starting with its first steps and especially on the literary work of N. Xenopol, unfortunately not very well known by nowadays readers. We try to analyze the main themes and the system of his works, including a critical view of his place in the history of Romanian literature.
