Summary/Abstract: The ongoing evolution of the agricultural function formally accelerated in Poland in 1994 when agricultural policy was included into rural policy aimed at multi-functionality of rural areas. Since then, development strategies of agriculture and rural areas have taken account of new functions of the areas, both commercial and non-commercial ones. The increasing significance of the non-commercial functions has led to their division into four parts: green, blue, yellow and white. The growing multi-functionality of Polish rural areas enabled greater support thereof from public, and especially from the EU funds. Thus, the development policy has become more and more important in the current and future regional policy. Now it is targeted at a region’s competitiveness based on local resources and the common actions of local inhabitants, business owners and representatives of local authorities. An important role in the consolidation of functions in rural areas is played by village renewal concepts.
