Summary/Abstract: Foreign language teaching and learning is a priority both in the wider European context and on a national level. Which language should one start with in the first place? Considering the dominant role of English as a first foreign language, the answer to that question is often debatable. Within that context instructors and institutions of foreign language teaching face the task of provoking and promulgating the learners’ interest in languages other than English as early as their very first steps in the process of foreign language learning. This paper outlines the problems that teaching German as a foreign language in the preschool and the primary school age has to deal with and discusses its place in the Bulgarian educational system.
