Summary/Abstract: Implementing the constitutional principle of sustainable development is now a major challenge for local government authorities. The most important common feature of the surveyed units is the immediate vicinity of the agglomeration center – Poznan. The subject communities are subject to very dynamic processes of social, economic and spatial transformation. In the context of strong suburbanisation and environmental pressures, the real challenge is the effective implementation of the concept of sustainable development. This article was based on the accepted criteria of the assessment of the degree of sustainability of rural communities in Poznan agglomeration. The results obtained, despite the diversity of the surveyed units, allow the classification of municipalities in terms of the level of sustainability.
