Summary/Abstract: Peripheral regions, and especially border regions, play an increasingly importantrole in the development of individual countries. For decades, they were considered as areaswhich inevitably had to be marginalized. Very often they were deliberately not developeddue to their location far from decision-making centers, thin population, and the restrictivecharacter of the border. In the united Europe, where inner borders ceased to be divisive, theborder regions deserve a special interest and support. One of the most interesting borderregion in Europe is the Polish-German borderland. It is essential to take actions aiming at identifying the advantages and disadvantages, aswell as opportunities and risks facing this particular region in the context of the changingfunction of the border and economic transformations on both global and regional scale. The revitalization programs are one example of such actions. They serve to create new developmentopportunities for those border regions in which unfavorable social and economicphenomena accumulated.
