On the importance of the first missonary books for studies of the Udmurt language history. A discussion article on V. V. Ponaryadov's paper “On alternate suffix vowels in Udmurt”

Summary/Abstract: In this discussion article we have analyzed the hypotheses proposed in the paper by V. V. Ponaryadov about the connection that ы / э-vowels of the suffixes in the Udmurt language have with Proto Finno-Ugric stems, from the perspective of diachronic typology. We have also checked Ponaryadov’s rule on the material of other Udmurt sources from different periods (archival and field data).
