„Where East is West“

Summary/Abstract: This article studies significant work of crossculture literature from the end of 20th century – the novel The Bridegroom Was a Dog by Yoko Tawada – a writer, that is half Japanese, half German, who speaks about issues of otherness such as gender and language. Yoko Tawada’s works are part of today’s global culture, in which virtuality, migration, the decay of postcolonial models, suggests ideas such as concepts of homogenus identity, which are no longer apply today. Cosmopolitan sense of man of the 21st century in Tawada’s works is expressed together with the sense of alienation – both inside us and inside others. Without a language, sentenced to be mute, cosmopolitan man is forced to once again to create from scratch his mosic strange language, his new identity. The dreams of the Micuko and reality in the novel interweave, and in the course of the usual events, the world invades the wonderful, inexplicable that the heroine considers to be quite common. The mythological references and images of the Japanese fairytale are symbolically represented and are perceived as a profound implication of the situations described.
