Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the meanings of the word ‘vertimas’ (translation) and theories of literary translation from the perspective of comparative historical semantics. Building on an extensive semasiological analysis of the metalinguistic term in European languages at different times and traditions the author presents revealing insights into the old Indo-European concepts of translation and interpretation, as well as relates them to certain turns and shifts in modern translation theories.
