Logistics concepts and business models in favour of sustainable development of the city

Summary/Abstract: Social and economic changes cause that the conventional structure of the logistics of urban areas in the future will not be able to handle the growing needs of cities in terms of their supply and waste management. Current infrastructure endowment has reached its limits of capacity, but the demand for space dedicated to the tasks of transport and logistics is constantly increasing. The possibilities of its expansion, however, are limited.. Therefore, in order to ensure the sustainable and low-carbon urban development, it is necessary to search for new concepts and business models for the design and use of logistics infrastructure. They should be based on the consolidation of flows, allowing to generate synergy effects in the urban supply chains. The observed trends tend to take up the issues of managing flows in the city and to identify the solutions for smooth supply of the retail stores in city centers, in accordance with the requirements of environmental protection.
