Summary/Abstract: Introduction: Cornea is a transparent ocular tissue with the mechanical function as a barrier between the intraocular structures and the environment. Moreover, it is the most important refractive part of the eye. Cornea is responsible for three quarters of total eye refractive power. These functions can be harmed by many different corneal diseases. Aims and methods: Aim of this article is to highlight some of the corneal diseases called corneal ectasia. These disorders have usually serious impact on the visual acuity of patient and also on his quality of life. Therefore they represent an important socioeconomic problem. Their negative influence on the vision is basically due to the changes in corneal curvature and transparency. This overview based on the actual achievable literature should clearly explain the nature of corneal ectatic disorders as well as their important position in the differential diagnostic process of decreased visual acuity. Conclusion: Corneal disorders threatening the visual acuity are in general a group of variable diagnosis with different manifestation and severity. Decrease in the quality of vision and subsequent decrease in the quality of patient´s life is their common feature. Corneal ectasia can cause significant reduction of the vision and moreover, there are both eyes asymmetrically affected. Therefore an adequate diagnostic process and resulting treatment are in this group of corneal diseases critical.
