Summary/Abstract: In the most general sense, lettering is the art of drawing letters. Today lettering is being used with an increasing popularity. It is seen that computer generated lettering or hand lettering is preferred instead of fonts in many design projects. At this point, as a graphic design component, lettering convey the message with its legibility. In this research, legibility which is the fundamental function of writing and typography is examined in the field of lettering that has an illustrative approach. Letterings that are specifically designed for and used in print ads are analysed and their contribution to the ads are examined. Also, the article puts an emphasis on the contribution of technique and form to the content in letterings. As a result, although the basic concern of the lettering is not legibility, it is not underestimated in letterings designed for print ads.
