Summary/Abstract: Introduction: The modern management of a surgical patient can be presented as a set of preventive and targeted arrangements aimed at reducing the effects of stress on the body as an entity. Implementation of the recent scientific advances in the context of professional clinical subspecialities without respecting symbiosis between microorganisms in the digestive tract and macroorganism as a unit may be unsuccessful. Content: A special role particularly in the assessment of patients with malignancies of the gastrointestinal tract in the perioperative period has the functionality of the intestinal microflora as a crucial element of the immune system. Composition of probiotic agents greatly potentiates the physiological microbial colonization of the bowel, which can prevent defection, or generalization of the microorganisms by bloodstream. The authors summarize a global overview of publications that focus on the issue of the length and timing of the exposure a particular type of probiotic to the digestive tract. Conclusion: The results of the quoted works from different areas of abdominal surgery are not convincing. Within the elective surgery of gastrointestinal malignancies, however, a number of factors that have lead to the rational and effective application of probiotic preparations in practice was defined.
