Summary/Abstract: It has been noticed in the art history books that the phrase of play is frequently used as a type of expression especially for the paintings related to abstract art. For this reason, it is aimed to investigate how the play exists and progresses in art. In this research, firstly, it has seen that humans are continuing to evolve through play. In the light of the opinions of the scientists involved in this research, it has been determined that art is a kind of cognitive play. Accordingly, it has been understood that the painting as a kind of surface game which depends on material and physical flexibility. Secondly, the paintings on the cave walls of ancient ages, which are considered to be the first examples of painting, have been analysed. It has been observed that there are actions such as scraping, drawing and repetitive dot making in these images analysed. These actions that created the cave paintings have been defined as surface games. Thirdly, Yayoi Kusama, Bruce Riley, and Aleita Andre who adopt ancestral surface games as an artistic style have been exemplified within in the context of the subject. Consequently, it has been deduced that the studied artists gain power for life through the play of painting.
