Summary/Abstract: Family-owned businesses generate more than 90% of Mexican GDP, and arein all industrial sectors, trade and services (KPMG, 2013). Given their presence in the national economy, they are considered as a trigger for development. Thus, the analysis of their competitive capacities is a pressing task. The objective of this work is to makea diagnosis about the competitive capacities of thirteen small family businesses belongingto the food sector, which allows us to highlight their areas of opportunity for the businesses to strengthen and grow. An analysis was made of both the sector and the organization. The methodology used is mixed; the data collection techniques used was polls and interviews of the owners, the scope is descriptive and the approach is non-experimental. The research results show that companies have practices that affect their performance. There is no clear separation between family and company. They have notclearly established in writing the rules of interaction between the company and family; and lack clarity with respect to the governing bodies. All the above affects the competitiveness of companies and prevents them from developing and growing.
