Summary/Abstract: 2016. marks the hundredth anniversary of the first publish of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce. It has been republished several times over years in United Kingdom and America. It has also been wildely translated. Joyce/s text is grounded in two literary traditions, the nineteenth-century realism and the british modernism of the earlu twentieth century. Portrait is also linked to the Irish national history and the Irish national and cultural revival. The essay discusses the main facts of the Irish battle for natiuonhood as the understanding of the historical background seem to be vital for the understanding of Joyce’s text. Besides, the essay deals with the genesis of the ideas and themes that structure the narrative of Joyce’s novel. The essay also addresses poetical, histroical and cultural origins of the text. The essay deals with the feormation of Stephenćs aestethic theory and its links with the philosophies of Aristotle and Thomas Aqaines. Lastly, the essay touches upon the issues of language and time in the novel in the light of joycean special narrative form of epiphany. The essay also presents the main directions of the novel’s critical reception.
