Summary/Abstract: Legends, sagas, traditional stories and songs about caves stand out in Bulgarian folklore with their themes, with their specific poetic imagery and functional character and constitute a lasting reflection of reality through a\recreation of images from reality. Thematically recorded folklore material falls into several groups: legends of hidden treasures in caves; legends of caves serving as a freedom fighters against Ottoman yoke; legends of mythical creatures inhabiting caves – dragons etc.; legends of sink holes, as a most common motive of the dropped shepherd’s stick, found elsewhere far away etc. Legends of caves – part of the history of the Bulgarians, also reflect historical events and personalities as well as themes in stories, they are in the live memory of the people.
