Summary/Abstract: Taking into consideration the dating of different Bulgarian family names from nicknames, dialect words and foreign words in the semantic field of "lie" (from the middle of the 19th century until the first decades of the 20th century), and their importance and quantitative presence in the territory of the Eastern and Western Bulgarian dialects, the present study is trying to trace the relationship between language and collective mentality and seeks answers to the following questions: What manifestations of lie were there at that time in the Bulgarian community? What manifestations of lie were condemned and ridiculed by nicknames? What manifestations of lie were tolerated - given the difficult living under the foreign domination? To what extent can we talk about an influence of the Turkish language and culture over the Bulgarian language and culture - given the long-term contact between the two ethnic communities?
