Summary/Abstract: The self-consciousness scale of Fenigstein, Scheier and Buss (1975) was translated into Bulgarian and its properties were investigated on a sample of 358 subjects. For the Bulgarian sample we obtained the same mean levels of private and public self-consciousness and social anxiety as in the initial sample. But factor analysis of the scale revealed two forms of private self-consciousness which correspond to the factors self-reflectiveness and internal state awareness, reported in literature . The last factor was named “self-knowledge“ because it also included the awareness of one’s appearance to the others. Self-knowledge was positively related to level of self-esteem, while all other subscales – negatively.
