Summary/Abstract: Modern Ukrainian orthography based on the phonetic principle was born in the 19th century: about 50 different orthographic systems were created by writers, ethnographers, linguists, and others. Some of these proposals, however, are not paid enough attention to in monographs. The present paper also claims that the scientists had to deal with two different groups of questions: the first set of issues was related to Ukrainian linguistic features, the other set was purely orthographic. Facts reveal that the solution to the first set of problems was much simpler. The final conclusion states that the re-evaluation of the 19th century in the history of the Ukrainian orthography is inevitable.
